Retirement D Visa - income for couples

jeanmandredeix

When applying for the Visa, if you are a couple does the income requirement double up? I know they don’t like to take into account work pensions? I am in receipt of my state pension but husband doesn’t get his till next year and his won’t be a full one as we lived in France for nine years but will receive company pensions. I assume you can’t do family reunification as we are both UK citizens?

Jean, my understanding of how it works is that the person receiving the pension applies for the D visa, and only needs to show they get the basic amount (equal to the Bg minimum wage if still working age, equal to the very low Bg OAP if you are over official retirement age). I hear mixed things about work pensions -- it really should count without any issues. I know forum members have gotten their D Visas on work based pensions and the London Embassy told me that, as well, though I have read that they prefer government pensions. On the application you only include your own pension income, not his.

Once you have the D visa from the Embassy in London, you apply for residency at your regional Immigration Office. Then once you have residency, you can apply for family reunification for your husband. So two separate visa applications.

I hope I am not wrong as that's how we hope to do it once I get my pension!

Alternatively if your hubby is already getting a work pension that's higher than the Bg minimum wage, he could separately apply for a pensioner D visa. Our issue is that hubby took very bad advice on his pension before we met, and though he does already get his work pension, it is way less than it should have been and not quite enough to qualify for a working-age retirement visa.
