Hi, everyone! My boyfriend (from the UK) has a temporary residency in Bulgaria for 5 years which expires in January 2026.

He is eligible to apply for Permanent Residency. Somewhere, I read that the process should be started two months in advance. But what is the earliest he can start.

can he start the application in October 2025 (3-4 months in advance)
I read he will need a criminal record. Does he need one from the UK or from Bulgaria?
how long did it take to receive the response and then how long it took you to actually receive the new permit?

They are now offering the 10 year, for eligible long stay permit holders.

Yes, he is eligible. But if his temporary residency card expire in January 2026 when would be best to apply? Is October too early? Somewhere I read it should be at least 2 months in advance, but some people said they applied few days before the expiry?

The big question is whether he got his long-term residence before or after Brexit? You can see it on his existing card (is there Article 50 TEU there?)

The application must be done no later than 2 weeks before the residency expires ....... they get p'd off if you leave only a few days for processing.
