driving or flying pet

Suzi Masterson

i need to bring my 6 dogs and 3 cats when we move. its looking to get a bit complicated with the 5 pet max rule (they forget idiots like me with more animals than sense are about :) )

to fly i can make it work as my father said hed come taking "ownership" of 4 then me taking the rest.

i cant find a direct flight to bulgaria! i have a reactive dog is my next massive concern.

if i drive them i have the same issue of to many pets with 1 van. and then again a reactive dog potentially being poked and prodded by boarder control (i get why they need too).

im hoping i can get both sides to try and sort which was is best for my lot.

ive also got a 12 year old dog whos healthy and puppy like as usual. but, im concerned shes 12 and a rottie x spaniel so not a smaller dog.

the move for us people. easy chuck it in a van. my brothers insisted he drives it. happy days. we jump on a plane. as usual its the 4 footed kids that cause the hassle haha

Suzi Masterson

@Powley it does yes than you :)

do they get the dogs out and check them? my lad is a german shephers X belgium malinior x staffie as his main breeds. him scared isnt a good thing for anyone out of my family. hence he isnt allowed in public ever

Suzi Masterson

i did read somewhere last night (i think im over reading in this tbh and worrying myself). that you can only take the pets into bulgaria through serbia or turkey..no where else is acceptable.

nothing is beong simple with this move. i cant wait for a week off after we move in. guarentee i wont do that and start the garden haha

@Suzi Masterson

I have only had to scan them at ferry ports, they give you the scanner to do it yourself, and we have done Romania but is quick through Serbia, for us Romanian roads still not finished

Hi Suzi,

Just wanted to let you know, we have travelled many times to bulgaria with our dogs, the dogs were only scanned for a micro chip at the Harwich port, the dogs were never touched again, in fact the border controls in hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, stay away from them, so I wouldn't worry so much.

We also looked at flying two of our friend dogs out from BG to UK last year,  there are agencies, but they have to fly from/to main airports BG being Sofia same for UK, as they have the facilities to cater for them.  Hope that helps.

When i drove with our grumpy german shepherd cross husky the border guards took one look at the boot and thought twice about opening it they never went near her lol

thank you :) i am very anxious about the drive with the dogs. its fear of the unknown i think. i have a german shepherd X belgium malinior X staffie X god knows what whos fear reactive (i keep him away from people he doesnt know). he has every reason to be fearful. people hurt him badly.

i wanted to fly him because itll be over and done with in a few hours. the only affordable option flys via germany. making it a 5 hour flight! thats to much.

my collies are taught to bark at people. so its going to be a loud journey haha

thank you for the reassurance. ill update you all once the move is done next month :)

Sorry to hijack your thread but I don't want to clogg up the forums with the same topic, what's the process and rough price for taking your dog over from UK to BG and back for a few weeks holiday? Our vet has quoted us over £400 for a jab and health certificate that only lasts a few weeks..

Is this right?

The dogs a jack Russell terrier and is coming up for 1 year old.

Any helps appreciated we would love to take her with us.

A health certificate lasts for 4 months and it allows you to travel through Europe. Your dog will need a microchip,  rabies vaccination at least 21 days before you travel and a tape wormer within 5 days of travel. Unfortunately it involves quite a lot of paperwork now, so a lot of vets are reluctant to do them. The AHC itself, usually costs about £150 per pet, but my advice would be to shop around, because some are charging stupid money, or just refusing to do them altogether. Good luck.

Thanks, this is what I see online, I just wanted to confirm, it's a shame the pet passport isn't a thing anymore, maybe I can get one in BG then keep the vaccinations up to date?

Also we were quoted again over £400 to get our puppy spayed, what's the rough cost in BG? It might be worth getting it done out there whilst I'm at my place doing some renovation work.

The UK has gone mental with prices recently.

Suzi Masterson

@grumpyoldbird

thank you for the info. we are pretty organised now. vets prepared for the health certificates already.

FYI they only need the tape wormer to return to the UK. we dont plan to return any time soon so no need :) That info seems to be misleading as my vet thought the same until we say down for a fairy long time to make sure. i also called up to make sure as the last thing id need is 5 very fed up dogs in the van and then to be told nope cant come

Suzi Masterson

@Suzi Masterson

oh and the health certificates are costing £316 each animal. the rabies jab was £60 for anyone else looking at the cost :)

Suzi Masterson

@CarlS1986

im paying about £400 per animal. its stupid money for what it is.

im looking to get my lot passported as we will be living there.  from what i understand of a friends experience trying to g et her british dog passported while in france they said no. even though she haad a house there and has done since pre brexit. still worth an ask. im getting my lot vaccinated in BG because its evidently £13 compared to over £70.

They are starting to clamp down on regular visitors to the EU obtaining Pet Passports and then keeping rabies shots updated in the EU, when the pet is officially resident in the UK. It's unlikely to be a problem in the EU, but when you travel back to the UK, you might have an issue If you have an EU Pet Passport, you can't have it updated by a UK vet, as it invalidates the passport, so it is a risk.

Vet bills in Bulgaria are much cheaper than in the UK.

grumpyoldbird

@Suzi Masterson

That's ridiculous pricing. I brought 6 dogs and 4 cats to France and they charged my £935, which I thought was a lot. I was the last one they did, because they are so time consuming and only certain vets are qualified to do them.

You can have an EU pet passport if you live in the 2 countries. I know people that drive back and forth with their dogs from Austria to the UK a few times a year and have properties in both countries.

CarlS1986

Thanks for the information, I'll just have to suck it up and pay the money I think.

I'm not able to move to BG full time for another 5 year's at the earliest, so I'll have to give the EU pet passport a miss.

Suzi Masterson

@CarlS1986

its one of the first things im going to try and sort out when we move. but we are moving though. visa isnt finalised yet. its in process

I don't think @grumpyoldbird was saying was that it couldn't be done in the EU, just pointing out a potential problem for anyone taking a pet back and forward. The problem would be at the UK end, not the EU end.

My understanding (and I checked this on the Gov.UK website not long ago) is that pets can travel on an EU pet passport, but a UK vet can't enter any info in it. Our four rescue cats were adopted from Cyprus so have their EU passports. But before we move to Bulgaria they'll need a rabies booster done in the UK, which means we'll need to get UK AHCs done, as the UK vet can't update their rabies status in their EU passport. It's going to be an expensive move!
