Getting stray cat from Varna to London

mmlbl

I am a UK resident on a business trip. I am in Sofia at the moment and leave in a couple of days. But I was just in Varna staring near the sea and struck up a bond with a little vulnerable cat on the beach. Know the there are many vulnerable animals and I have donated to the animal charity in Varna. But I would like to be able to find this cat and bring it to London with me. Can anyone help me with how I can achieve this or even begin the process.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The process for importing a cat into the UK is described on the UK Gov website; this will take you straight to it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I found this. I was after advice on the process of getting a stray and help on how to arrange things on that end, in Varna, Bulgaria

@mmlbl

First you need to find the cat, then find a trustworthy vet. It will take at least 3, weeks before it can travel as it will need a rabies vaccination. It may take longer, because some countries have a two part rabies shot. It will also need a microchip and a passport and I'd advise having a full set of vaccinations including leukeamia, maybe known as FIV vaccine. Also I'd recommend that you have it sterilised before you travel, because it will be a fraction of the price in London. Within 5 days of the date of travel, it will need to have a tapeworm treatment. Good luck. If you don't have time to do all that before you travel, you could try to find a cat rescue who will get everything done for you and put the cat on transport, but that's not going to be cheap. Good luck.

@grumpyoldbird Thank you so much. Yes, I realise that I will need to leave it for a few weeks after I find it. I'm trying to contact animal charities in Varna to see if they can help shelter it for that period. Do you know of any reputable shelters?

What a wonderful thing to do! We have four rescue cats, but they're from a cat rescue in Cyprus. It wasn't cheap getting them here but worth it. They have the joy of a good loving home rather than a  rough life on the street (as they're all special needs, their lives would have been very short) and we have the joy of their delightful and highly mischievous presence in out lives.

I'll post links, but they may not be permitted on this site, , so if you Google cat rescue Varna, they'll come up. I have no experience with any of them but they look legit. There's a lot of paperwork needed, more post Brexit, unfortunately, so ideally try to find people who have experience with the process.

Tenth Life have a website and specialise in cats, they're experienced in getting cats ready for overseas adoption.

There's also Animal Hope Varna, who are German but may speak English, they have a website and FB page and have been running many years.

Which animal charity did you contact? They should have links with the right sort of people, or volunteers who would board the cat for you. I'd gladly look after Sandy for you but we're in the UK at present.

Hello

Not advice just wondering if you managed to sort this?

I am in the same boat with a kitten near sport palace hotel. Leaving Varna tomorrow but can send exact location of the kitten (not yet old enough to travel), it will need a foster until old enough to be treated and travel.
