Can someone give us information on expat communities?

djc50plus

Hi All,

I currently live in New Jersey, USA. My wife and I are considering retiring in Uruguay with my wife's elderly aunt. We plan on visiting as soon as we can. We have researched, and Uruguay seems like a great place to retire. Can someone give us information on expat communities? My wife and aunt speak Spanish fluently, but I only speak English.

Thank you...

Hi djc,

There is an Uruguay expats whatsapp group which if you send me a private message, I'll send you the contact so you can be added. The group is mostly located in the Punta del Este area which is where many expats gravitate to. You are lucky to have Spanish speakers in your family. That will make your life much easier.

Cheers

Hello, my family and I are planning on moving to the Punta del Este area towards the end of '25. Would you be willing to share this whatsapp group? We are currently looking on how to find a place to live there. Rental? Airbnb? Etc.

A while ago, I searched AirB&B and VRBO (I've never used either) and came across a listing titled "Entire home in Neptunia, Uruguay" and it was listed for $55/night and accommodates 6 people! But only 1 bathroom - maybe that's why it's so cheap.

The dates I entered were April 20, 2025 to April 25, 2025 which I just picked out of thin air. Not sure if it's still there, but the owner had very good reviews.

You said Punta del Este is popular among expats. What about the Malvin area which is about halfway between montevideo and PdE.  I am looking an oceanside condo that is not finished being built. thanks in advance.

Welcome to the community, Jim. You will find that Uruguay has very interesting beaches to offer.

Who is selling you an oceanside not yet finished in Malvin, which is supposed to be half way between Montevideo and Punta del Este? This sounds like a nice piece of swamp land in Florida, if I may say so.

Anything between Montevideo and Punta del Este is not oceanside but riverside (although the Rio de la Plata can be hundreds of km wide and has an increasingly high content of salt the further east it gets).

Malvin is not half-way between Montevideo and Punta del Este but a part of Montevideo.  The Rambla is nice in most of Montevideo but the beach is much more populated than it would be half-way between Montevideo and Punta del Este.

Please be careful, if things do not add up.  Search Malvin on google maps.  Ask the sales person for the pin for google maps and a prospectus or a web link for the development.  All of these major condo building have at least one or the other.

If you send me the pin by private message in the next few hours by private message, I can offer you to drive by and take a picture.  I will be in Montevideo on Tuesday, but I live in Colonia.

Happy real estate hunting.

Hi, sorry didn't see these messages addressed to me. I'd rather not give out the contact for the whatsapp group publicly just so they don't get inundated with superfluous requests. Send me a DM and I'm happy to share it.
