Destashing a house...help

Denise in Denver

We made the decision, have started the easy part, paperwork and passports..... now the selling everything.

I am not particularly attached to everything, but the enormity of emptying out everything makes me cringe.Ìý Can anyone suggest where they started,, and how they proceeded?Ìý (Having 5 children use us as a storage facility was not smart either.)Ìý We have given them all notice, but so far they have all said they would be glad to take the massage chair!
Ìý
I was tempted to sell it at an estate sale,, but was told that was a very bad idea, and we would not be happy.Ìý I am just so excited, but it sure is tempered with the amount of items to go through and sell, pitch, and re-home.Ìý

Any words of advice or a way you started?Ìý Did it happen room by room, or garage first,, someone kick start me please!!

Hi, we made the same decision and had some of the same setbacks.Ìý We live in the US and my children live in Canada and they don't want to come down to get anything more than they already have taken.Ìý We,initially, thought about taking everything in our 4 bedroom home with us to the house we just had built in Cuenca.Ìý As a matter of fact, we just got back from Cuenca and measured all the rooms to see how things will fit and we are now strongly considering getting rid of everything and buying things there.Ìý Some things are more expensive but the most expensive things, we have already bought there. Appliances are more expensive but, again, they are already in the house.Ìý So, our house is for sale and we are offering many items to the buyer so we don't have to hassle with them.Ìý Its easier than donating or trying to get friends to take them.Ìý These things are just possessions and if we had thought about this move 2 years ago, we would not have bought a brand new car or some of the furniture that fits the house we have in Kentucky.Ìý Hindsight is a wonderful thing.Ìý There is no easy answer for any of us. Moving to Cuenca is the goal and we will do whatever it takes to get there.Ìý Look forward to the peaceful quiet life and look forward, not back.Ìý Memories are what we can keep.Ìý Good luck.

Hi Denise,
We are moving from Australia to Ecuador, where do you start we have a big house full & want to take some things with us. We are thinking of a container. We are going to rent out our house here in Australia I need some motivation every where I look is any job. We have 3 children plus partners & our house still has cupboards full of children's things. Paying storage here is too expensive. Good luck with it, hope you are doin well and can motivate me.

Moving to another country is a hard decision but taking your belongings with you is even harder. What I left, what I take with me? And when you sell or donate them you feel like you waste your money when you bought them.

On the other hand sea freight moving is expensive and many times buying new stuff is cheaper than ship yours. You have to make the numbers and count with the sentimental value. Also deal with the paperwork, sometimes extra expenses and regulations.Ìý

So is not an easy decision but if you finaly decide to move some belongings to Ecuador I can help you with info, rules and quotes.
