Road safety in Ecuador

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Navigating roads and experiencing traffic in Ecuador as an expat can be a learning experience. We invite you to share your insights in order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats stay safe on the road in Ecuador, whether driving, cycling or just crossing the street.

Are traffic rules strictly respected or enforced in Ecuador?

Are there any unspoken rules, unexpected habits or regulations that you had to adapt to?

Are the roads safe and well-maintained?

Are there specific times of day, weather conditions, or seasons that make driving more dangerous?

If you have children, do you feel comfortable letting them travel alone on local roads, whether on foot, by bike, or motorbike?

What are your tips or advice to stay safe on the roads in Ecuador?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

Car alarms are the bane of tranquility. Most cars have them - and the alarms all sound the same. There could be a 2025 Ferrari or a 1985 Yugo and one would not know from which the sound was emanating. How someone can sit in his car while listening to an ear piercing alarm as if it was elevator music beats me..........Car horns! When the traffic light turns green the drivers lay on their horns. How a driver ten cars back blowing his car horn is going to affect the driver at the light is a mystery to me..........Car turn signals are another story - they are rarely used. The wiring on cars here should be reversed. When the horn is used it should activate the turn signals and vice versa..........Traffic lights and stop signs seem to be a suggestion - pedestrians beware!..........Gee, are their police here? I thought they were the Boy Scouts.
