Gasoline shortages, 2023-24

cccmedia

Long lines of cars have been reported

in recent days at gasoline stations

around Ecuador due to a shortage of

product.

The governor of Azuay province (Cuenca area)

says the problem is that tankers are

backed up at the Panama Canal.  She says

a drought in Panama has caused the authorities

there to restrict the number of vessels that

they allow to cross through the Canal Zone.

@Jean-Robert145156 ... to clarify from the article: "The tankers are carrying the additives needed for the fuel"

Gasoline additives increase it's octane rating or act as corrosion inhibitors or lubricants, thus allowing the use of higher compression ratios for greater efficiency and power. Often required to meet environmental abd performance standards, types of additives include: metal deactivators, corrosion inhibitors, oxygenates and antioxidants. More importantly, fuel stabilizers are added to keep fuel in a functional condition when being stored for a long period of time without use; Gums and varnishes form otherwise rendering gasoline unuseable.
