That is true:  once your application has been accepted, the clock is no longer running on your visitor's visa, and you're set, unless the Federal Police rejects your application for some reason (in that case, they'll give you time to fix whatever is wrong).  Once they accept your paperwork they'll give you a "Protocolo", that will serve as your temporary ID and proof of residency, until your CRNM comes back from Brasília.

So, it's important to get all of your documents right the first time.  If you're still entitled to an extension, and you think that there may be a delay in submitting your application that runs past the end of your current visa, they you should request the extension as you approach the end of your 90 days; it won't interfere with your application, and it will give you some peace of mind.  If you can get it done and  in before your time is up, though, there's no need.  Good luck, and welcome!

Hi: On a similar vein, I received an email on Nov 20 that my application was received and I have to wait to receive a time for interview. Do you have an idea when or should I ask? Thanks for your input.

It is hard to wait, I know. but the MJ's agencies are swamped. Even in good days, it took over 6 months for me, but those days had home visits. Check on status in June.

Pay attention as to "accepted". They take the documents, but they have to accept everything. As abthree points out.
They will issue you protocols each time you go to PF. It may be for a document that was not correct or for many reasons. Once all documents are accepted then you get the protocol and they will advise  you the PF office has accepted and you can stay. Brasilia has the final approval.
Remember to keep the protocols safe and secure.

Thanks everyone for the great info! I'm so happy to have found this board full of helpful people. I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions coming up during this process, haha. Most likely I will file an extension just to give some breathing room, I'm just hoping that will be enough time to gather everything I need. Thanks!

Advice do your application ASAP.
My case took only 1 month after submitting all docs.
The situation  (amount of people) at the Police Federal in Sao Paulo was not as bad as when I tried in 2018-2019.

In my case age (63) played a role and also I used a company to check and submit all docs.

Also I forgot to say that they meet you only after scheduling an appointment! No walk ins!!
