How to renew Digital Nomad Visa when passport about to expire?

ParticularPublisher

I have a Digital Nomad Visa (with my wife 'attached' to mine, not sure what the right term is) which is due to be renewed in April. My wife's passport is going to expire a few months after that. What's the best way to sort this out? If we go and travel and get her passport renewed before the visa runs out, then how will the loss of the physical stamps and visa document inside the old passport affect the renewal? Or do we keep the old passport to show all that stuff?

Alternatively, since my wife is Portuguese and we've already been here for over a year, I did think about the possibility of applying for my wife to get residency here (and I believe that that would also allow me to stay in the country too, if I understand correctly).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

09/22/25 Welcome, ParticularPublisher.  Unless your countries  - you've said that your wife is Portuguese and I assume from your profile that you're British - don't return the old passport books to you when you renew, then the safest approach would probably be for you to renew your passports at your respective consulates, and then keep both passport books with you until you renew your visas next year with your new passports.   The visas in your old passport  books remain valid until their expiration date.

As for your wife applying for residency and bringing you along, that depends on how the time required for the residency process lines up with the remaining time on your  visas.  You could start by asking about it at the Federal Police, but you also may want to consult an attorney.

I have renewed my UK passport twice from inside Brazil, simply by carrier - no need to return to the UK or go to the Consulate - maybe Portugal does the same? Just check the relevant Government websites. You can also ask for the old passports to be returned (with corners cut off), but copy your stamps, etc before you send them off in case of mishaps.
