We have our NIF and use it only half the time. I am wondering when and why we should make sure to use our NIF and how it works at the end of the year.

If you pay IRS (taxes) in portugal then I would say all the time that's what we do & our IRS bill from last year to this year has come down a lot

In fact, you need to use it all the time. You could use it every time you bought something at a supermarket, bakery, coffee shop, etc.

When you declare IRS to Autoridade Tribut谩ria, you will see how much tax you paid. It depends on how much you earn that you receive some value back.

Hi Butzen
I totally agree with you it took a while to get used to giving out our NIF number but we do it all the time now as what we received back from 1 tax year to another makes it worth while doing, even as you say in a coffee shop anywhere you are buying things always give your NIF number
