Country Bumpkins (but social!)

CountryBumpkins

Hi, we (my husband and I) are looking to move to Malta - quality of life, sunshine, shorter commute, etc - and because we wouldn't know anybody when we came out, we'd be keen to get to meet people and make friends.  We're also pretty social folk in general.  However, we're also both quite 'country bumpkins', so I can't imagine us enjoying living anywhere very built up or in an apartment - we'd definitely be happier living somewhere more countryside, or at least in a smaller village with countryside around.  (We also have 3 dogs so they'll need outdoor space - and yes, I know this will limit where and what we can rent, as not all landlords would allow 3 dogs!).  So...

...I believe quite expat/British/social places are around Sliema and St Julians area.  Any suggestions then, please, as to more rural/country/small village locations that might suit us, but that aren't too far from these areas?  Also, if we were to end up right in the north of the country say (I was reading an earlier topic, where someone said the north and central is more dog friendly for rental properties), how long would it take to drive from the north to places like St Julians, please?

All advice and comments really appreciated, please - thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum

I notice you have information about life in the North....my advice would be not to discount life in the South (my wife comes from Qrendi).  It has a slower pace however, access to more social places like Birzzebugia, Marsaxlokk and Marsascala is quite good..........(indeed traveling anywhere in Malta is not too difficult).  There are many rural villages in the South and you would probably find that the cost of living is a little cheaper - I'm sure that Scubaboy could give you the 'lowdown' on life in the South.

Good hunting.

Hi Country Bumpkins,
Please keep us posted on your hunt for somewhere small village like as we are hoping to relocate late 2014 and have a young son, 8, as well as an elderly dog who lives in doors and we need to be looking at animal friendly properties and space too.

I will be working from home but my hubby will be commuting to, most probably, Sliema :unsure

Good luck with the hunt.

I live in Mellieha, you can't get a  lot further north, I am also a social person and go out a few times a week, often to St Julians/Sliema. It takes about 25mins

Nothing is too far away, if you have a car I'd live where it suits you

I am on the edge of town (village?)and very close to country, where I walk my dogs, but I can also walk into the main town with shops etc, and have met others who live here, so can be social locally as well as further afield.

I haven't lived anywhere else, so can't comment, but like you didn't want to live in Sliema/St Julians as too built up

North or South - have a look at both - dont get blinkered - they both have the same things to offer and different things to offer too.

Hiya, and thanks Mike,

North or South there is quite rural locations, I happen to Love the south for the people and the friendliness.

I live in Birzebbuga that has a great beach and cheap beer, I work in Sliema and the commute is about 45 minutes in Bad traffic, although a crash could make this 1 - 2 hours (Never touch wood happened yet)

On a Saturday Morning I usually travel to either Marsascala or St Julians to teach Diving, and St J takes about 20 minutes and M'Skala is about 15 minutes.

Do yourself a big favour and Visit both Areas, I am willing to assist (Facilitate) anything that you might need around the south area and have access to very good contacts for properties.  The Agents will definitely push you towards the central areas though.

If you need anything PM
