Car Importation

gareth24

I brought my EU registered in Spain Toyota to Malta with the knowledge that I meet their criteria to be exempt from importation tax as I have owned the car more than 2 years and lived outside of Malta for 2 years. But as is normal here the Tax Agency and Transport Malta have hit me with a 8300 euros importarion tax. This is unaffordable for most of us including me. I took it to Tribunal and they are upholding this with no reason given. They even impounded my car costing me 300 euro.

What is the situation with taking the car to Sicily? Is it every 3 months, 6 months? Does Transport Malta have any legal right to take your car?

Any definite help will be much appreciated.

Malta’s import tax is harsh and often enforced despite exemptions. The tribunal won’t help without legal pressure. Driving the car to Sicily every 3–6 months to avoid tax is risky, Transport Malta can seize it and has the legal right.

Get a specialized lawyer or either pay the tax or permanently export the car. Dodging it by moving the car risks fines and impoundment
