Moving in 2 weeks - seeking some advice!

MikeyMcD

Hey,

So I finally landed a place and am moving over from the UK in less than 2 weeks, so just seeking some last minute advice regarding residency and opening up a bank account.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with residency, will I get any grief for staying beyond 3 months without applying for a residency certificate? Or is a certificate mandatory if you wish to stay beyond 3 months?

Also, are there any requirements for opening up a bank account because as a non-resident I wonÂ’t have a tax/fiscal number so just how easy is this process, and what are my best options?

Cheers!

And if anyone fancies a drink feel free to let me know!

Presumably you are an EU citizen and depends what you want to do.  As an EU citizen, obviously then you can come in and out without restrictions. You are supposed to register officially if in HU more than 3 months. However, if you go in and out a few times, no-one will say anything to you about it.  If you are concerned about it, you can always fly into Vienna or Bratislava or anywhere in the Schengen area and cross the border into Hungary by road without anyone really looking or scanning your passport.  They wouldn't know if you were in country or not.  Flying means they know your passport number and your arrival point but they don't know where you went after that.  If you drive, then they won't know unless you go in your own car and you are seen on camera somewhere.  When you come back into the UK, they will scan your passport but they won't know where you've been.

Regarding the bank account, you need the same kind of documentation as in the UK.  As far as I know, you do not need a fiscal number of some description, just some ID and something with an address on it.

Welcome to the forum. Where is your place in Hungary?

Angolhapsi

hello mikey

congratulations on the placement & welcome to the forum!!

hopefully you will love Hungary as much as I do  :D

i moved here in march, after 9 years of organising .... and it took me 3 months or so to sort ALL my paperwork

how long will you be staying ??

and where??

and what do you do for a living??

fluffy is correct over the 3 months thing - you are supposed to do it, but as barely anybody checks the passports anywhere ...  ;)

it was VERY quick & easy for me to get registered though, and get my tax number, and open a bank account, and get my Hungarian driving licence  from my UK one - registering my car was a different matter, but only because the computer system would not recognise it, and everything had to go off the Budapest [live in Ikervar, Vas]

the only stumbling block was National Insurance ... to go straight onto the system, they wanted 300,000Ft [not happening] - the alternatives were to get an up to date statement of NI contributions from the UK [took 3 months], or to be in the country for 12 months and then join the system FOC ... I did get my statement, but with the time it took, I was already 1/2 way through the 12 months - now 3/4 of the way, without incident [yet!!], and I DO have my E111 card for emergencies  :)

email me if you need to discuss anything off forum
