Planning to move to Munich

GuestPoster741

Hello,

My wife and I have visited Munich twice in the past few years, enjoy what the city has to offer and are planning to move to Munich mid 2011, we're currently living in Sydney, Australia.
I hold a German Reisepass but my wife doesn't. As we're in the early stages of planning the move, what steps do I need to take in order to apply for a working visa for my wife? Do I have any other options available such as applying for spouse/partner permanent residency?

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Hi chritker,

My husband and I are going through the same thing. He's a German citizen and I am a U.S. citizen. We were living in the U.S., but he got new a job here so we just moved to Munich a couple of weeks ago.

The first thing we did when we arrived was go to the München Kreisverwaltungsreferat (I think other cities call it Einwohnemeldeamt or Auslanderamt) so we could register ourselves in the city. But we found out that for me to get a residence card, I must either show proof of my college degree or pass an A1 German language exam with a certificate from the Goethe Insitut (the latter costing €50). I can stay here without a visa (as a vacation) for a couple of months, but not having the residence card means my husband is in a higher tax bracket, nor can I register for health insurance. I haven't completed the process yet, but hopefully will in the next couple of weeks.

Hope this helps some!
Ami
