It's not very easy to get residency in Bulgaria. What category of D visa are you planning to use?

Hello I am moving to Bulgaria in January of 2026 leaving Canada. I would like to know if mass immigration is a problem there compared to the Western world.Thank you. - @Aldridge26

Many Western countries face challenges with mass immigration, including Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Sweden, and Denmark, with the issue often exacerbated by large numbers of refugees and migrants from regions like the Middle East and North Africa. These countries frequently debate the impact of immigration on their economy, social climate, and infrastructure, leading to a wide range of political and policy responses, such as border control measures and new integration initiatives.

Because Bulgaria is the poorest country in the EU, I wouldn't say it is. However, I would say it is becoming more attractive to retirees from the West, as their money goes further and they have a nice little house and a comfortable lifestyle.

You haven't shared your reason for moving over. Is it work, love, or something else? Will you be needing a visa, as that can be tricky?

Oh, nearly forgot, but have you visited the country before? It can be quite a shock to some people who have bought a place without visiting the country.

There have been a few posts in the past here that have put the country down, saying it's too expensive, the house wasn't what the picture was like when they bought the property, etc... So I certainly would do your homework first, and of course, you can ask as many questions as you like here.

Sometimes on a Sunday you can stumble across a marauding horde of brits haggling over some old tat out of the back of a car boot ("trunk").

Apart from that, it's mostly locals everywhere.
