Wasps in the basement of our village house

Kath948381

We've just found around eight or nine live wasps in the basement area of our traditional Bulgarian village house. We've never had this problem before but we use the basement as our kitchen, corridor and living room during the summer. So how do we get rid of them ? What's causing them? Is there a spray we can get to get rid of them?

Husband just mentioned that we had new double glazing windows installed around spring/ summer last year could a wasp have got in then and laid eggs?

spray watered bleach on them taking care of your painted and any upholstery surfaces etc as bleach stains, find the nest watch them first to find where it is and once found spray that too but be prepared to run as they get grumpy and will happily sting for a laugh…worked a treat for me as had a nest in my diggers battery compartment, didn’t last long!

If they're large ones, they're probably Solitary Wasps, which build small round adobe/mud nests for their individual families and, as the name suggests, don't live in colonies.  They're not at all aggressive and live mainly on insects or spiders.  You can usually just collect them with a glass or jar and release them outside if the look of them bothers you but I just let them be..

Thank you they're small but with a wasp shape. I've never had to deal with anything like this before I'm just glad husband's here with me. He bought two tins of spray foam and used half a tin  in the affected room and closed the door. Hell look in on the situation tomorrow. Just another challenge living in a Bulgarian village I suppose but heaven knows how they first got in because the windows must have been replaced the year before last. Any ideas how it happened?

Husband thinks that they may have come down the chimney because although there's a wood burner attached to one part of it I've not lit it for well over a year because it needs a good clean and the lady time I lit a fire in there it set off the carbon monoxide detector so I've not touched it since.

I'd get your chimney checked out, sounds like you could have a birds nest blocking it.

Yes we will get the chimney checked and it needs to have metal put around it on the roof as well. We have no intention of using it until it's safe. And it seems the wasp treatment is working and as we're getting a village bus this afternoon I've asked husband to spray it again before we go to the Burgas this afternoon. Thank you SimCityat
