Q For US citizens who acquired Bulgarian Citizenship...

ameliamerrick

New member here.

I am a US citizen, born in the US with a Bulgarian Citizen father. He currently resides in a nursing home in Bulgaria.

I am attempting to go through the daunting process of acquiring citizenship through birth right/origin and the immigration lawyer ive been communicating with is suggesting that I should go all the way to Bulgaria to complete the health requirements as the Ministry may not accept a US version and i'm wondering if anyone here DID get accepted using the health checkup requirement in the US and what protocols they went through to get it done.

Considering that i can complete my application process through the Consulate in LA, i'd like to get this process done without actually traveling to Bulgaria for this one line item if i can help it.

Thanks!

Hello,

Of course, you can visit the country to see your father, but regarding the law, there is no requirement to complete medical check-ups in Bulgaria.

According to the Ministry of Justice of Bulgaria, you may complete the check-up in your country, but it must be accompanied by an Apostille from the Secretary of State where you reside. You will likely need to have it translated, which can be done at the Bulgarian Embassy in the US.

For acquiring Bulgarian citizenship for individuals of Bulgarian origin or those with a parent who is a Bulgarian citizen - based on Article 15 of the Bulgarian Citizenship Act:

"A medical document issued by a Medical Consultative Commission (MCC) of the healthcare institution serving the person in their place of residence, certifying that the person does not suffer from acute contagious and infectious diseases under Article 61, Paragraph 1 of the Health Act, or from mental illnesses under Article 146, Paragraph 1, Items 1 and 2 of the Health Act. If there is no MCC, the document is issued by the general hospital MCC of the respective hospital. This document is issued by the relevant foreign authorities if the applicant lives abroad, requiring certification in the appropriate manner (certification with an 'Apostille')."Good luck!
