Registering a vehicle in DR without residency.

Gcjackson2277

Hi folks,
Hope everyone is well. I am in the process of building a villa in Sousa area. I visit a lot and would like to ship a car vs renting when I travel. Is it possible to register and insured a car without residency?

Welcome to the forums.

Yes you can register a vehicle in your name without residency.

Do you truly understand the costs of Importing a vehicle without residency?

Gcjackson2277

Thanks for your response.聽 I know I will need to register, tags, and insurance. My wife is also Dominican so we can leverage her residency or dual citizenship.聽

This is my understanding: my understanding are as followed: please let me know if i missed anything from the below?

Taxes & Duties for Dominican Republic Car Shipping

If you are shipping a vehicle to Dominican Republic from the USA, your car will be subject to local customs duties including:

20% on the CIF value 鈥 (cost, insurance and freight). For vehicles fabricated in the USA this tax is 0%. Also, every vehicle which VIN# starts with 1 are made in USA. Vehicles with VIN# starting in 4 & 5 made in the USA will also be 0% However, not all brands apply for 0%. This will depend on origin of materials the parts used to manufacture the vehicle.
聽 聽 Tax 鈥淚TBIS鈥 鈥 18% from Vehicle CIF value. (For all Makes and models)

Shipping from Florida will be about $1,000 USD

planner

Ok so you are not shipping as an expat, you are shipping as Dominicans. Totally different scenario!

I think a Dominican, 6 months out of the country.... gets a deal

Worth looking in to

Yes - shipping as a Dominican sound different. I hope someone has/can find precise info on this subject....

Cars here are only registered in one name. Our US title on our car was in both our names, so there was additional paperwork needed when it was registered here in just my husband's name.

If you're planning to import the car using your wife's residency, it might make the process easier if you have the US title in just her name. But I don't know if that would reset the clock for the one year of ownership that is required.

planner

Great info!聽 THanks.

cruffman

please remember that the one year of ownership is a little more than owning...it must also be registered and insured during the year. you cannot just buy it and put it in storage...

Interesting - they never asked us for anything on the registration or insurance of our car in the US prior to import.

WillieWeb

Nor me - it may be one those 'forgotten' rules

Each importing experience of items into the DR can be unique.聽 Only general trends can be discerned.

You are likely to pay full import duties as if your not getting the break for new residents.

WillieWeb

The tax import rate stipulates the one year of ownership....
And sale is restricted for 3 yrs...... no sale period

All set up to avoid scammers importing cars under dubious/false circumstances

I am sorry to reopen this discussion, but I have a similar question.聽 We have bought a house in Sos煤a.聽 I am American, my wife is American/Nicaraguan.聽 We are getting ready to apply for residency and know this will take time.聽 For now we will use our home in Sos煤a as a vacation home and our primary residence will be in the USA.聽 I would like to stop spending money on a Rental Vehicle, plus the hassle of hauling over little scratches every time we return the vehicle.聽 As a visitor, within my authorized period of stay, can I legally register a vehicle, as a tourist, that I purchase in the Dominican Republic.聽 Please leave it your opinions of vehicles, mechanics, new, used.聽 We will pay cash, we understand the culture, we embrace the way of life.聽 Shit happens everywhere.聽 Thank you in advance.聽 Please again, only the registration question.聽 We saw a video on line that says only Legal Residents may get vehicle registered.

WillieWeb

Yes, I think you can own/register the car as a nonresident

planner

Yes you can own and register in your name here.

flgman1966

Thank you!!!聽 Saw a video on YouTube by K Lo K.聽 Not promoting that channel.聽 There are just limited videos and information on the topic.聽 He said no vehicle registration if your a visitor.聽 On the other hand, he also said you can't purchase a vehicle in the Dominican Republic that is over 5 years old.聽 I do know that the 5 year rule only applies to imported vehicles.聽 So some sketchy info.

That's a load of misinformation

richardaa589581

How much doses it cost for the matr铆cula is that the regration and the license聽 plates or are is that a separate fee and does that make ownership of the car and title ?, i was quoted like $42,000 pesos for a Gringo

planner

That part is based on the value of the vehicle so that may be correct.聽 聽If there is a "fee" for their services, whoever is doing it, that's something else

frank marcus

@planner

Good day Ma'am, please could you advise if it is possible to buy a car and register it in the Dominican republic, i am renting an apartment but have no visa at all only tourist stamp, if yes what would be the cost

frank marcus

can you route me to a lawyer who can accomplish the registration.

Kindest regards,

Frank

UncleBuck

@frank marcus

You will have no issues buying, registering or insuring a vehicle here with only a passport. If you are buying from a dealership, they will take care of all the paperwork. If you are buying privately, a Notary Public can handle the transaction.聽 The newest law says their fee is a percentage of the transaction value, but you will find many who will offer a flat fee.

The only caveat is that you are no longer legal to drive after 30 days when your tourist visa expires, and it is debatable whether your insurance will pay out should you need it.聽 The police care about none of this if they pull you over.

frank marcus

Good day Sir,

okay understood but eatleast i would have a cover for 30 days. I am anyway travelling in and out of the country due to my job and a extended visa might be not so easy

Tippj

I鈥檝e had to stay passed the 30 day limit聽 鈥 once 鈥溌 鈥nd talked to the insurance company and聽 a few police officers and asked if I had an accident what would happen , they all said the same thing , it would be investigated as any other accident no difference and Thats聽 only if someone was injured , otherwise they wouldn鈥檛 even investigate a fender bender , and if it was with a motorcycle , the motorcycle is guilty automatically , 馃ぃ this was about a year and a half ago

frank marcus

Thank you so much for your feedback

CHRISTOPHER DAVID56

@Tippj

That all depends where you are in the country, what mood the police are in, etc that's still a huge risk. Best to follow the laws of the country without the Russian Rollett!

My two cents

Steverino7777

@Tippj

聽 I have often wondered what would happen to me if a motorcycle hit me and injured themselves. They tend to be crazy drivers.聽 I assumed I would be detained and prosecuted because I am not from the D.R.

I make sure my auto insurance has a clause that puts me in a hotel instead of jail if I am detained because of an accident. Are you familiar with this insurance policy?

Papito NL

@Steverino7777

鈥淐asa de conductor鈥 is de clause that puts you in a 鈥榟otel鈥. Also many advice to install a dashcam in the car because no matter the accident you will likely get the blame unless you have some proof.

planner

UncleBuck is correct.

Let's clarify again! If you drive when your status is NOT legal your insurance could say too bad so sad. Does it happen - yes. Does it always happen - no. You decide the risk you want to take.

Tippj

@Papito NL

amazing what you learn on this site ,聽 I鈥檓聽 going to look into that聽 insurance rider ,

that seems it may be worth it 鈥.thanks
