DIGESETT will Start Testing Drivers for Alcohol this Friday in SD.

Guest2022

In the name of AMET, they have tried before having bought 1200 breath testers several years ago and rarely used them.

DIGESETT plan to start testing drivers in Santo Domingo on Friday to evaluate the problem of drink driving and in the initial days they will be aiming to educate drivers away from drink driving and not issuing fines. Rather strange approach because the stated aim is to reduce accidents and we all know drink driving is a huge problem in DR. Fines will follow though - most other countries include driving bans too for drink driving and penalty points. Suggests a lack of belief in success from the outset to me.

They plan to extend the drink driving testing little by little.

Actually great places to start this testing and educational process would be at the toll booths at Las Americas (going west) and Pedro Brand (going south) and at Rio Haina (going east) on a Sunday afternoon.

My bet would be far more than 50% way over the limit in all places!

Remember what it was like in other countries when they first started their programs!Ìý Same here.

Most dominicans don't get drunk and they all drive better after a few.....

Here is a report today on the start of the testing:

It seems they are testing between the hours of 11.00 and 03.00 Friday and Saturday in the capital (Av. Winston Churchill) and anyone who exceeds the prescribed limit is advised and not allowed to continue driving. They say they will issue further testing hours and locations in due course. Very decent of them!

The legal limit is apparently 0.5gr/ltr in blood and 0.25 gr/ltr in air exhaled. The limit for public transport drivers and taxis is zero.

Let's hope they continue and expand!

From published reports, sounds like it went well. 46% of the 65 people stopped tested positive. Half of those were under legal limit, half over. Most stayed till they sobered up. A few had to get transportation home. Fines are to be based on prevailing minimum wage in the area. And, points are to be assigned to drivers licenses.

Dominican Today has an article on this . The legal limit is .25 which is over 3 times the .08 that is in most places. I think the last time I drank that much was back in college. But really don't remember as everything was a blur back then. The article also says pedestrians also will be tested.

I think there is quite a lot of mis-reporting of the actual limits in force here now. I am guilty of not copying what the article I posted stated. The limits both in blood need to be written fully and not abreviated.

It appears the legal limit here for alcohol in expired air is very tight and on par with European legislation (Spain included) and is tighter than the UK at 0.25 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of air.

Ultimately it is the blood alcohol limit that matters anyhow.

I’m not saying that the idea of taking breath samples is a bad idea. However, the validity of such devices is currently in question as per the accuracy of the device doing exactly what it pro ports to do. Secondly i give a thumbs down to your suggestion that the highways leadingÌý back towards Santo Domingo would be ideal a location as the likelihood of this interfering with commerce and the flow of traffic may cause gridlock when testing is done at a toll station.

I give a massive thumbs up to testing and any attempts to get damn drunk drivers off the road!!!!

Getting them off the highway is always a good idea wherever it is.Ìý And really how much commercial traffic is there at peak drunk driving times - 11 pm to 3 am???Ìý ÌýDoing it at rush hour is stupid but late at night, really who is it interfering with?Ìý

Sadly we are 40 years behind in education regarding driving drunk. Ask most here they will tell you they drive better when they areÌý "caliente " .Ìý Which of course means they are delusional!!!
