Coffee?

Nancypink157

Trying to prepare for first “discovery” trip and thought Costa Rican coffee might be a good start.
That is until flights start again from US.
Any particular companies to suggest that I could buy stateside for the time being? Thx!

Have no idea what they sell in the USA. I have seen Costa Rican coffee for sale Bulk in stores like Sprouts and Whole Foods and Trader Joes in California but no brand. It was good though.

The coffee most Ticos who like coffee drink (though surely not the best to a connoisseur) is "1820". To me this would be like "table wine" to a wine connoisseur.
So while not the best it's very serviceable and enjoyable. I've noticed that the Ticos who really know and like coffee (some grow it), this is their preferred brand in many cases. Like me, they may prefer the Britt, but simply cannot afford it on a regular basis.

I drink the 1820 daily and love it. I'm not a connoisseur per se but I do care about my coffee and there are many I don't like and some I do.

Britt is the most famous brand here in Costa Rica but I think it's way over-priced. Also Britt has so MANY types that some are very good and some are not good at all (to me).

Here's an article. I can't vouch for any of these coffees though:

When I would come here on vacation I would go across from the central market in San Jose and get some fresh roasted (you can see them roasting it) coffee at Volio to take home with me. At Volio, one should buy the most expensive one because it's still cheap. But the store packaged ones aren't as good, though the Volio premium package is good, just not AS good as the fresh roasted ones in San Jose.
