Is it possible to buy a house in Malaysia ?

AngelaCanberra

I wonder if it is possible to buy a free standing house, with a large garden of at least 1/4 acre , near one of the good international schools?  I am interested in living in Malaysia, but apartment living is not for me as I have young children who like to play outside and we love gardening.  Is there anywhere where this type of life is an option in Malaysia?  Thank you.

Yes, it's possible.  It's even REQUIRED for the MM2H visa but I think the stipulation is that you have to buy from a developer/builder and not from an individual.  The SEZ visa requires that you buy in Forest City.

With further thought, it may not be so easy to buy a property with such a large yard from a developer/builder because usually I see developments with smaller yards if any yard at all.

I bought lots of apartments in Kuala Lumpur some years ago. I did consider buying a stand alone house and there were never any rules against it for foreigners back then. The only reason I didn't is because the cost was a lot more expensive than an apartment and the rental income lower than what I could get for an apartment. This was many years before I got my MM2H.

Also, there are condominiums that have both high rise and low rise apartments, the ground floor ones often have decent sized gardens.

Sorry I am out of touch about whether foreigners are still allowed to buy properties without an MM2H, but you can easily contact any agent and ask them.

Yes, absolutely.  I’d highly recommend checking out Duta Tropika. It’s a gated and guarded neighborhood in a super convenient location. Some of the best international schools are just a 10-minute drive away (depending on the time of day, of course).

There’s also a mall right in front, within walking distance, and grocery runs are really easy. The community has a good number of expats, and it’s very family-friendly.. kids roam around freely and safely.

Definitely worth considering!
