Business Visa After 178 Days on Tourist Visa – Risk of Refusal?

taj.marine

Hi everyone,

I’m a French national, self-employed, and I’m hoping for advice from anyone who’s dealt with Indian visa rules.

My situation:

I spent 178 days in India earlier this year (2025) on a tourist e-Visa.

I now plan to return in mid-September 2025 on a regular (paper) Business Visa (not an e-Visa).

The trip is for legitimate business (co-developing wellness programs with an Indian company, non-remunerated in India). I have a strong annual income in France and a solid invitation letter.

My concern:

I’ve read a lot about the “180-day cumulative stay” rule for e-Visas (especially tourist), but my visa agency says this doesn’t apply to regular Business Visas. They say the main rule is 90 or 180 days per continuous stay (with FRRO registration if you stay longer), but not a yearly cap.

Still, I’m worried that airport immigration might flag my history (178 days already) and refuse me entry or question me heavily, even with a valid Business Visa.

Questions:

Has anyone done something similar (long stay earlier in the year, then returned on a Business Visa exceeding 180 days total)?

  1. Did immigration question you? Any issues (refusal, fines, blacklisting)?

  1. Any tips to make entry smooth (what to say, documents to carry)?

Would love to hear any first-hand experiences or advice. Thanks!
