Is Mauritian creole and Haitian creole similar?

Yelles

Hi There,

Want to learn Creole before arriving in Mauritius but can find nothing really to assist other than articles. I am looking for audio lessons via the internet, etc. Anyone know of anything? There is a lot more online about Haitian creole but not sure if it's even similar.

just learn french - creoles can generally understand french - creole is a simplified version of french and you will be better understood by the french people here. If you have french as the basis, creole will come naturally - as it is much more slang.

Hi Yelles,

Haitian creole is very similar to mauritian creole but is not the same, i agree with Keno; if you learn french, creole will come naturally.

Hi Yelles,

i was able to converse in my mauritian creole with someone from Haiti in Hamburg and we understood each other perfectly well. But apparently it depends from the region, there is a part of haiti where they have a different dialect, am not so sure if its the northern part... but anyway - it worked :)
