When to pay taxes in Mauritius?

Ottomus

I am a bit confused about how the registration of official residency works and when you have to pay taxes in Mauritius?

  • You do NOT register your official resident address with some government body, like with the civil status office, correct?

  • When you open a bank account with a Mauritius bank, does the bank then inform automatically the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), so that the MRA can charge you (income) taxes to pay?

  • When to pay taxes in Mauritius? How does the MRA know that you are resident / tax liable in Mauritius?

For tax, you need a TAN (tax account number). If you work for yourself as self employed, business or company, you need a BRN (business registration number). You get these from the MRA. The bank will not inform MRA for you. Register online with MRA to do tax online. If you work for yourself, you can register with CBRD online too. Tax return is due 16 October .

Right, thanks. And how/where to register that you are officially resident in Mauritius? I guess there must be some government body that records all resident people in Mauritius?

@Ottomus That would probably be immigration department. You will then need to get an national identity card - ID card.
