Can You Guess What Is Ecuador's Most-Visited Attraction

cccmedia

According to the Pan-Latin America TV Network Telesur, the most-visited  attraction in Ecuador, with 600,000 visitors annually, is 12 miles north of Quito.

It is the middle-of-the-world monument at Mitad del Mundo, at latitude 0 degrees right at the Equator.

Inside the tall monument is a museum showing the cultures of Ecuador.

Outside on a painted Equatorial line, visitors can participate in "trucos" possible only at the Equator, such as balancing an egg on a nail.

Interesting question. I can't really think of an Ecuadoran attraction that should not be missed. In Quito we liked the central plaza of the old colonial city. I visited the gilded Iglesia de San Francisco.

Cuenca was nice. Nothing really spectacular to be visited.

Guyaquil was just a big sprawling port city.

The coast was nice.

I guess Ecuador's most spectacular attractions are the volcanoes, but I'm not much of a hiker at 12,000+ feet, the Galapagos which aren't exactly in Ecuador, and the Amazon basin which is pretty far off the beaten path.

We missed the Middle of the World monument as I saw plenty of pictures of on tour brochures and felt no need to go stand in front of it to take a photo.

Can't really think of much.

It's hard to beat MoW, but I am a bit biased as it is practically in my back yard:

Middle of The World / Mitad del Mundo- Updated - about 2 weeks ago, 20 Km's North of the Quito City Limits - Lat: 000' - MoW is in San Antonio de Pichincha and the New Equinocial Park is 5 mins South near Pomasqui.:

They just finished & inaugurated w/ all SA heads of state present - the $42million UNASUR Building in front of the park entrance about a month ago! Got my main road repaved for the first time in 7 yrs, yippy, progress!

Of course there are very expensive cruises to take in the Galapagos islands, but most greenies complain that tourism is ruining those islands, so I plan to avoid them for that reason.  I could see Middle of the Earth, reminds me of one of my favorite movies as a kid, Journey to the Center of the Earth.
