Hi everyone!聽 My name is Tracy.聽 I am currently living in Florence Italy for one year, which ends this July 2016.聽 I will be home in CA for a few months, then coming to Santiago for six months.聽 I wanted some feedback on the area of Belles Artes?聽 I found a couple of great studio apts in a building there which are reasonably priced if I sign a six month lease ($775/month...does this sound good??), but since I will be signing a 6 months lease, want to make sure it is a good area for a single 52 year old female?聽 Is it centrally located?聽 Will it be easy public transport for any jobs I hope to find?聽 Is it safe?聽 Are there places to run?聽 I would like to live in a hip place with restaurants, shops, etc. within walking distance.聽 Six months is a long time to be stranded in a less-than-desirable area!聽 Also, what is the VISA situation?聽 I will be looking for work teaching english (school and/or private lessons) and babysitting/conversing/playing with kids in english, as I do here in Italy.聽 But will be coming over without a job.聽 I hear my passport (tourist VISA same thing?) will be good for the first 3 months.聽 Can I get that extended for 3 more months (like in Argentina) if I don't have work-sponsored VISA by then?聽 And is this done by going somewhere in Santiago?聽 Is Chile the same as Argentina where you can only stay for 6 months maximum (per year) on a tourist VISA (3 months to come over and 3 more extension)?聽 Anyone with any advice, please share.聽 I want to be there legally and to have no VISA issues as a barrier to finding work!聽 Also, is there much work for english with kids privately?聽 And where would I advertise (besides on this site) once I get there?聽 Oh my...I need so much guidance!聽 Thank you so much for any input, suggestions, feedback, advice, etc.聽 Tracy

Tracy, The Bellas Artes area is great with lots of caf茅s and restaurants and arts and culture. Rents have really gone up these last two years although an apartment with one or two bedrooms should be costing you around 400-500.
As to teaching jobs you should be able to find work in that and receive an initial wage of around 400.000 CLP. There are various language teaching institutes that are hiring (native English speaking) teachers around this time of year, like Comunicorp, and that help them get all their papers sorted out.

I don't know much about Santiago or the jobs situation but I do know you can renew your 3 month tourist visa聽 once for a small fee or by leaving the country and then you will need to apply for temp residency and it can all be done in Santiago. Best wishes!
