Queue  the Martindale directory at first, but I would certainly recomend that you seek advice from other Brazilian Business people who use the services of a good tax attorney.

Mardindae's reach () extend towards the Brazilian practicing community.

Attorneys here are a dime a dozen.

I would favor someone who can speak your language and can walk you through the mazeway.  If they need a translator, then avoid them.  There should be enough schooled attorneys who can speak your language.

If you cross the Martindale query against  peer referrals, than you are more likely to make a safer choice.  Check the billing rates while at it.

I was just watching this thread thinking I had everything under control but ....
I've been negotiating with an attorney in Salvador to review this rural piece of property Im negotiating to buy and to persuade the seller that he needs to be a little less greedy.
The attorney is part of a practice with 23 members, focused primarily on import/export corporations and tax issues thereby.
He speaks usable English for everyday, its not up to apostille standards but its helpful, although he has an interesting Irish accent.
But the man has requested a retainer of me of US $7,000.  I've never paid my US attorney more than $1,000 for any service like this.  He claims its because of high taxes and bureaucratic nightmares in Brazil.
What is customary?

I should update this .... Sergio Botinha was extremely helpful in the negotiations and we were able together to close last week on this property ....the land was known not to have ever been owned by anyone before, I had never heard of such a thing but Im always down for a new adventure ...

If I was reading your update you our closing on a piece of property that has no ownership. How does that work I seen where documents weren’t filed correctly or not even filed. But there were documents that showed ownership. Again how are you getting ownership of the property. Thanks

I am hardly an expert.  I am going to find out how it works.  Or if it works.  Certainly Im more familiar with title searches in my native area that can be traced all the way back to the original claim on behalf of the King of England.
The whole area, however, of Chapada Diamantina, has a history of untamed and lawless pursuits, private armies or mafia, and there are still today unknown numbers of individual diamond hunters pursuing furtive claims.
The particular neighborhood is so steep that most of it is quite inaccessible except by drone...Ive broken bread already with a few close neighbors and hope to establish some rapport.  I think my main goals for quiet enjoyment and isolation will be appreciated.
My philosophy about it is that Im going to need the oral support and unspoken recognition of the community at large to retain control and respect for what I want to do, and I enjoy some successes in like endeavors because I tend to respect common people rather more than either authority figures or self-appointed pedagogues.  I have been treating the builders and workmen with respect and hope to continue along these veins.
