Hi Craig,

First of all what kind of personal items are we talking about here, your household furniture???? If that's the case, forget the idea completely unless your furniture is antique and worth an absolute fortune because it isn't worth the expense in shipping from Canada to Brazil. I know because I checked it out before coming here from Vancouver almost eleven years ago and even then it was excessive. Also a lot of the things like washers and dryers, electronics will either need to be modified or won't even work on the voltage which can be either 110v or 220v depending on where in Brazil you will be living. Many items you won't be able to use at all or could be running a real risk of being sued if something goes wrong as a result of using them (you cause a fire) because they don't have the INMETRO seal equivalent of the CSA test which would not be acceptable here.

If your are talking about things that you could pack into a few big boxes it's probably going to be much more expedient to pack them up securely bring them on the aircraft with you as excess baggage. It will probably be cheaper too, check with your airline about the cost. I left almost everything behind in Canada because of the cost, came here with 3 big boxes of stuff and even that was more than I should have brought. Even so the cost was minimal and it arrived at the same time and place as I did because it was as excess baggage.

If you're talking about furniture you will probably be able to replace almost everything here with brand new for what it will cost to ship your stuff. Desktop computers, notebooks, netbooks, etc., will work here and it is worthwhile bringing them as excess baggage, but you must always be aware that they don't bear the INMETRO seal and be prepared to accept the legal risk.

Beware, those are only valid for brazilian citizens returning back home and not including motorized items etc. Even for them, lots of companys had troubles shipping and clearing stuff on borders controls :



I would inquire the cargo service of the air company you will be using for extra luggage fees, or else, its just not worst it.
