Any English speaking expats in Macaé or Rio dos Ostras - RJ

James

Hi Jim,

The way that Brazilian names are derived comes from the Portuguese colonizers.

A child is given one or more given names and also takes the family name of his/her mother and the surname of the father.

Example:  Ana Clara Souza da Silva - Ana Clara being the given names; Souza the mother's maiden name; and finally da Silva which is the father's surname.

So the Admiral's given name is Julio, his middle name (effectively the mother's maiden name) is Soares, and his surname is de Moura Neto (Neto, which by the way means grandson, at the end of his name means that his granfather was Julio Soares de Moura and it was for him that he was named).

Similarly, when a woman marries she drops the mother's maiden name, but does not lose her surname. She simply adds on to it the surname of her husband. So if Ana Clara were to marry José Carlos Costa her married name would be Ana Clara da Silva Costa.

This is really only a general rule since she elects a married name and can either continue to use her maiden name or opt for using any part of it in combination with her husband's surname. So she would not lose her mother's maiden name if she opted to keep it. Here the marriage certificate acutally specifies what name the bride will use from that point on, since legally it replaces and supercedes her birth certificate.

Hope that this clears things up for you.

Jim, they usually use both surnames of each parent. For example, if my moms maiden name was Smith and my dads last name was Lopes then my name would be Brantley Smilth Lopes.

Derek, What made you change your mind about teaching English in Brasil?

Hello My name is Charles i also have been in Sao Paulo the last ten years. I am looking to move down to Macae soon and would love to have someone with a bit of local knowledge help me to get to know the area. Please let me know if you would be up for meeting to have a beer and a chat and help a fellow expat.

Best Regards,

Charles

Would anyone know how I could find a room to rent eventually I will move my family but whilst I am building my business i want to keep costs down. I would be a excellent flat/house mate as I will hardly ever be there. I will probably be in Macae 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off but have no problem paying for the full time rental.

azaia

Hi there are a lot of opportunities, rent is about R$ 1500-2000 and go up to R$4000 in Cavaleiros.

Apologies for the SUPER delayed response Wayne. For some reason, i was missing the email notices for this blog (also started a new job and have been extremely busy).

I still plan on teaching English when I return but as i said, I want to do it as a way to pay for food, entertainment, etc. I'm trying to save money here in the U.S. to possibly have enough for a house/condo there so I don't have to worry about living expenses.

I'll try to visit here more often as it motivates me to have conversations with people who ARE/WERE/OR WILL BE  ... where I want to be! (that is in Rio das Ostras or Macae). Going to work now but will add more soon. Take care all

Derek

Definitely appreciated William! Hey, let me ask you a question. I was only in Macaé once and didn't have time to go to the beach. Would you say it's comparable to Rio das Ostras? I'm trying to weigh whether to stay in Rio das Ostras when I return or try out Macaé. Also, do you have any phone numbers or websites for any realtors there? Thanks in advance!

James

Hi Derek,

The only really decent beach in Macaé is Cavaleiros and it's no match for Rio das Ostras. RdO is also a much quieter tranquil spot for sure.

Hello, my name is Daniel and Im from Chicago, living in Brazil since 2010 now and moved to Cabo Frio about 5 months ago. Was living in São Paulo, but moved here due to better quality of life. Finding other expats and people to talk to that have gone through similar things in life like me as a huge change of life is encouraging as I am currently looking for a job now, preferably offshore. But with experience in other things like quality control, expansion and  management. Looking in Macaé, RJ.
Any one got any ideas???

Thanks...

James

Hello Daniel,

On behalf of the entire Expat-blog Team welcome on board and welcome to the State of Rio de Janeiro.

If you're looking for work in the area of petroleum, especially offshore, you should come up to Macaé since all the major players are located here. Petrobras (Imbetiba) is responsible for the operation of their platforms in the Campos Basin.

If you do come up here sometime send me a private message and we'll get together for a beer or coffee. I teach a lot of people at Petrobras.

Hello William Woodward,
I came to Brazil with a entire different focus of work, 27 years old now and analyzing my life to see if the direction and decisions I have made are really what I want. Lets say, I'm re-inventing myself. I moved to Cabo Frio, its about an hour from Macaé, and I have a friend that was telling me focus on Macaé, on finding a job offshore, he said they are always looking for people that speak English. Kinda not sure where to start from as he said its always better when you have references. So thats were I'm at now, finding am opportunity offshore.
How do I do 2 send a private message??

James

Hi Daniel,

There are two different ways to send a private message.

1. Click on INBOX at the top of the page or on MY INBOX in the menu bar on the right side of the page, then click on green SEND A NEW MESSAGE bar, type the username of the intended recipient and then your message.

2.  Click on the member's name or photo in a topic or reply they have posted. This will open their profile. Directly below their profile photo you will see an envelope icon and SEND A MESSAGE.
