Do you lose your UK driving licence when getting the Brazilian CNH?

ParticularPublisher

I've just got around to looking into the issue of getting a Brazilian CNH so as to drive here for longer than 6 months at a time (in the past, we would just travel out of the country every six months to avoid the issue), but there's something I'm still not clear on.

When going through the process to get the CNH, do I give up my UK driving licence? Or do I get to keep it so that I can still drive whenever we go back to England?

Hello

ParticularPublisher,

Welcome to ½ûÂþÌìÌà 😀

That is an excellent question you have raised.  Thank you for posting it!

I am sure other members who have gone through the process will be able to shed some light on how it works in practice.

Hopefully, you will get some helpful insights soon!

Cheers,

Cheryl

As a Brit who has been living here for 18 years I can help you here. I did keep my UK license after I got my Brazilian one until it expired, but then I was unable to renew it. Like you, I thought it a good idea to use my UK license when driving in the UK, however I soon learnt a neat trick or two if I use my Brazilian one.

1/ It can be cheaper to rent cars on a Brazilian license in the UK, as there is confidence that you will not try to steal the car and drive it to Europe to sell.

2/If clocked speeding, for example, you should only have to pay the fine, not receive the points, as they have no access to your Brazilian license!

Bear in mind, though, you would not be able to hire a car on your UK license, and then present your Brazilian one to avoid any fine...

You can also obtain an International Permit here in Brazil (of your Brazilian License), and I have had to use that in some countries that demand it.

Probably not permanently, but maybe temporarily. It depends on the State. I lost mine temporarily during the conversion process.

No, with the new e-cnh system, you receive back all your application documents after they scan it. At least in sao paulo
