Can You Receive Your Monthly Social Security Payment in Dollars.

roddiesho

I currently receive my social security payment in dollars as an extension of the set-up I made with PayPal before I left the U.S.  Now that I am officially a Permanent Resident of Brazil can I still receive my monthly payment in American Currency?

@abthree Thanx, in the middle of IMMIGRATION 1st and me running around the USA etc. to get my Brazilian Residency I never changed my address for Social Security. I am listed at my brother's home in San Francisco as a default while we sold my father's home. At some point I need to make the change (I am hoping to do it in person, after my 98yr old mother passes).  Currently we are very comfortable because I receive dollars into my account each month.

Unless Social Security starts giving you trouble, you're almost certainly better off leaving things as they are for now.

A year ago, I would have said that transferring management of your account to the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) in Lisbon, which handles account management for SS recipients living in all Portuguese-speaking countries, is as easy as filing a form with them and has some advantages, notably that they're easy to reach and deal with, and your payment date changes to the 3rd of the month.  However, with the chaos that is currently engulfing the US Federal Government and extending to the embassies abroad, I think it's a bad idea to make any changes that aren't absolutely necessary.  It will be at least months, maybe years, before that changes.
