Beach Trike

alan279

@kmitch0077

Thanks!

alan279

I installed mirrors on my trike so I can see the speedier bicyclists overtaking me on the bike path (I'm just slow).

I bought front and rear lights so I can get home after sunset on the bay. LEDs are amazing!

My bike mechanic installed a new brake lever today that actuates both rear wheels (relacing the individual left and right brake levers that made no sense to me). And I now have a parking brake! Necessary for trikes. Who knew?

I bought a pressure washer pistol. Battery powered, with a 5 meter hose with a filter that I drop into a 3 gallon bucket to wash the trike.

I have an old plastic tarp to cover the trike until I find a proper cover for it

And I need to sort out which lubricants to keep the sea air at bay.

Whew! More work than I imagined. But low tide is at 8am tomorrow and I plan to go for a long ride on the beach on my trike. 😀

Sounds like you’re enjoying the ride! Good deal. Keep us updated.

Beach ride:

@roddiesho

I too had never heard the term "beach trike" until now. I too would prefer walking

alan279

Low tide, new moon. Easy pedaling south on the beach, going north was a slog against the wind.

roddiesho

@alan279 Sounds Good, just don`t go crazy when you take the next turn and see that HUGE advertising Billboard on the shoulder.

Roddie back from the rock 🕵

Bike path close to the beach. Mostly grade separated from the freeway.

And I discovered a new breakfast place! 😀

alan279

@rraypo

If only I could walk ten miles on the beach as I once did. 😕

alan279

I triked three miles south into the center of the new beachburbs in Ilhéus.

An update.

I’ve had my beach trike for six months now. It gets me around the neighborhood and five miles down the beach. Pretty much as I had hoped.

I took it to the neighborhood bike mechanic and he adjusted the brakes and gears (shifter?). He will order some stainless steel (inox) spokes for the wheels. Corrosion on the beach is fierce. I received a stern lesson on bike lubrification.

The beach trike gets me around to almost everything I need to get to, I get some exercise, and I really enjoy my rides on the beach.

An update on my beach trike.

I've owned my beach trike for six months now. It gets me around the neighborhood to the shops and restaurants and bars. I ride the trike around the bay most days. I ride as far as five miles down the beach when the wind isn't too strong.

My neighborhood bike mechanic just adjusted the brakes and the 7 speed shifter. He charged me R$10. And he ordered replacement stainless steel (inox) wheel spokes. Corrosion is fierce on the beach.

All in all, the beach trike is working as I had hoped.

@alan279

Can you post a link with a picture? Or a link to a shop who sells these things? I can’t really imagine how a pedal-powered vehicle could work on the beach, that’s why I would love to check it out.

Thx. I’m surprised that this working, is the sand particularly dense (hard) where you are using it? I doubt that this would be working on “my beachâ€, I suspect it would sink too deep, or certainly deep enough to make it very hard to pedal.

alan279

The trike doesn't do soft sand well at all.

My beach is very wide at low tide. It's smooth, effortless cruising for five miles.

And there is no beach at high tide.

I thought so. Where I am, even my skinny dog leaves deep footprints (pawprints?) …
