CRNM renewal problems

Zoey 01

Hi everyone,

I'm currently facing a situation with the renewal of my CRNM here in Brazil and need some advice. I submitted my renewal application before my current CRNM expired at the end of September. However, the earliest appointment I could get is in October, after my current card expires.

I'm concerned about potential penalties and my legal status between the expiration of my card and the appointment date. Does anyone have experience with this situation? Will I face any penalties for this gap if I've already initiated the renewal process before the expiry date? Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

If your completed application was accepted by the Federal Police before the expiration of the previous CRNM, and you were in Brazil legally at that time, then you will receive the rights of the new CRNM until you hear from them. So no penalties, etc.

@Peter Itamaraca Hi, Perter! Thank you for your reply! May I know where did you get this information? :)

It is part of the administrative laws for dealing with visas. Speak to your immigration attorney if you have any doubts?

Hi Zoey. Peter is right. I was in the same situation than you last January: I applied and had my application accepted before the expiry date of my CNRM and had an appointment date after its expiry. I had previously confirmed with FP that it would be ok. My new CRNM is now ready for pick up at the Salvador Airport and I don’t need an appointment to pick it up.

I email FP - Foreigners Registration Unit at the Salvador airport many times and they were very helpful, responding within a few hours each time. I was very impressed. Here their email address:

@Soliloquy20203 thank you so much for your sharing! I also sent an email to confirm this issue with the pf in Santa Catarina, but I didn't get their reply. Thanks to your clarification, I am not that worried about this issue. :)

To compliment what has already been posted, many people mistakenly believe that the CRNM (National Migration Registration Card) and residency status are the same, they are not. While you cannot obtain a CRNM unless you are a resident at the time of application, your residency status may remain valid after the CRNM expires, depending on the type of residency. This is provided that you have not stayed outside Brazil for more than two years.

On my last renewal, I submitted my application several months after my previous RNE (the former CRNM) had expired. However, living in Brazil without a valid CRNM can be quite problematic. Additionally, since I had no opportunity to travel while waiting for the CRNM to be issued, I am unable to comment on how travelling during that period might be affected.
