Cost of living in the USA in 2025

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Every year, we invite you to share your experiences with the cost of living in in the USA, especially in the region or city you live in. Your insights will greatly help members planning their move to the USA or already living there.

Here are some points to guide you; the idea is to provide average prices for each category:

What is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in the USA?

What are the typical fares for public transportation such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

How much does health insurance cost? What is the price of a medical consultation in the USA?

What are the tuition fees for children?

What are the average monthly costs for utilities, such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone plans?

How much do you spend monthly on leisure activities?

If there are other expenses you find relevant, please feel free to share them!

Thank you for your contribution.

From the US.  Left in 2012.  Thinking about coming back.  I have minimum SS, am 74 and were I to attempt it, I would end up living on the street.  Ayhan FYI  dont know whether you are familiar with Numbeo.com but it is here

This is a really important question for anyone thinking about moving to the US. The cost of living can vary wildly from state to state and even from city to city, so it's smart to do your research.

It's helpful to focus on the big three expenses: housing, transportation, and healthcare. Rent or a mortgage will likely be your biggest monthly cost, followed by owning or leasing a car. Healthcare costs can also be a major factor, so it's essential to understand your insurance options. With some research, you can definitely find a location that fits your family's budget!

That's a very good question. The cost of living in the USA can vary so much from one city to another. It's a great reminder to research a specific area you're interested in, as the cost of living in a big city like New York is very different from a smaller city in the Midwest. A good tip is to find a budget calculator online to get a rough idea of what you'll need to live comfortably in that area.
