Sponsoring a Specific Individual as a nanny?

SaraSyed

Hello,

I was wondering if its possible to sponsor an individual to come work for us as a nanny? My neighbours sister visited rom Philippines for a year and she is a darling. If we stay in Canada we were going to sponsor her from Philippines to join our family in Canada next year. If we move to Oman is it possible to sponsor her to come for us there?

Kindly share any information you have for this.

Thanks

Hi SaraSyed,

Yes, you may. Provided your sponsor / employer permits it. Because the maid's sponsorship too would have to be provided by your sponsor / company's sponsorship only.

Besides a formal local Philippines Embassy registration might be required, but nothing further.

Thank You!

As Sumitran says.

The problem is with Philippines not GCC countries.  To exit her country, there is a huge amount of requirements which is why most people get maids through agencies vs. doing it themselves.  If you have her in Canada already, it's better to bring her to Oman from Canada and get her a residency here vs. sending her back to Philippines and then bringing her.

But be aware that if she needs to go to Philippines on vacation from Oman, to be able to return, she would need to have an OEC clearance from her Embassy in Oman.  For that you need to do and register a contract in the Embassy before that can be given.  Ideally, when you bring her here and get her residency, go to the Embassy and register the contract.  Then for every trip, it is a 10 minute job to go get an OEC clearance.

SaraSyed

Thank you,

That is a very detailed answer so i teuky appreciate it. She is here on a visit visa not for working. I just know her and found her to be great with kids so I proposed she care to Canada as a Nanny through proper channels once she gets back. There is the trust factor therefore I am considering all possibilities.

Do you work in the embassy? You seem to have travelled quite extensively and have great info.

Thanks

Easier to bring her without sending her to Philippines even if she has to stay in a place like dubai while you process her visa.

Nope. Not embassy staff. Just lots of travel and life experiences.

@SaraSyed
Housemaids are generally sponsored by the employers to specific employees.  Not everyone is eligible to sponsor a housemaid too. For example, back in SHELL, I was provided with a housemaid by the company and the whole responsibility was taken care by SHELL itself, that include her wages, accommodation, travel etc and I had nothing to do with it. However, if your employer, in case, does not take these responsibilities, yet her visa will be based on the employer itself with you as a guarantor. So make sure the documentation should be in line with all requirements to avoid any future mishap as it becomes quite critical sometimes in different cases.

It's a good advice but unfortunately, not everyone complies with it. Secondly, the above case is implicated on those people who sponsor the housemaid as an individual. A person doesn't need to take this hassle with the company sponsored housemaid because the resident card / visa is dependent. Trust it would clarify.

As far as I can tell, the poster would be needing to do it herself.   Especially since she is employing a specific individual.  Companies generally used to provide house staff for senior employees through a service provider on an all inclusive basis but this is becoming rare with all the issues that are happening in the GCC on visas, costs etc.  Now it is as you said; in countries like Bahrain/Oman (minus UAE) the employer is the guarantor but the individual is the sponsor himself/herself i.e. bearing the cost, responsibility and the hassle.

And the biggest hassle is the OEC.  The Government of Philippines requires OEC for almost all overseas workers (not just housemaids) if they want to come back to work after visiting the home country.  They are not allowed to exit Philippines without that.   To get an OEC , certain labour formalities need to be fulfilled in the country the worker is employed in. And it is actually easier if an individual sponsor does it (through simple contract as I highlighted above) vs. a company - POLO requirements are much more stringent for company employees.

SaraSyed

Thank you everyone.

I would certainly be comfortable sponsoring and being responsible for my nanny. I don’t want to leave it on the employer as they might offer her a wage lower than what I want o give her. She’s an elderly lady and I wouldn’t want to steal her of her possible comfort just because we decide to move places. If she agrees to come and join us in Oman she will be doing our family a favour.

Thank you all
