Moving to Sweden at the end of August
Hi guys,
I am 49 years old, from the Netherlands, and I would like to stay in Sweden for 3 months from September 1 and if I like it, stay there longer or even live there. At the moment I have no work, but if needed I have capital enough for living there for at least another 5 years without any other income, although I have no intention at all of having no other income for so long.Ìý
Since I do not want to pay unnecessary extra rent, energy costs etc by keeping the rent in the Netherlands during this three months trial period, I have already canceled it so that I have to leave here at the end of August anyway.
Now it would of course be the best if I could arrange a rental house in Sweden for at least 3 months already in the Netherlands before i go, but I can't view it because I am not in Sweden yet, and when I arrive I have to spend the night somewhere until I have found something of course.
What do you recommend to me on this point?
Until then staying in a hostel or hotel?
Where I am going to rent something in Sweden is not that important to me. As long as it is not too northern (too cold), not more expensive than 900 euro a month (is about 9000 Swedish Krona) the house is a nice free-standing house, there is public transport nearby, a supermarket no more than 5 kilometers away and I can also receive mail at my house.
Another thing: Because from september i won't have a home anymore in the Netherlands, i will have to forward my post to a nearby address in Sweden so that i won't miss any post. If needed I guess you can't forward it to a hostel or hotel, right?

Hello, Little bit outside of big cities in a classic smal town 9000 SEK is good enough for an apartment, even for a freestanding house but normally it is hard to find freestanding house for rent in smal towns. Check here
However if I were you and if I decide to live longer period in Sweden I would buy a small villa in a small town instead, since market is much better for buyers now. Less than half of your 5 year budget would be enough to buy a small villa in a small town somewhere in Dalarna, Örebro, Västmanland, Kalmar to mention som possible counties. check hereÌý Ìý
Regarding adress; some small hotel owners would allow you to forward your post to their adress for week or two but not to register at the adress.Ìý

But I just read something worrisome on a website about Sweden. It says that you can hardly do anything without a Swedish personal number. It says:

Is this all true? And is it even true that without a Swedish personal number you even can't buy a house?? That sounds so strange to me.
By the way, in the time i don't have a house yet, could i also hire a mailbox at the post office somewhere in Sweden where my mail from the Netherlands could be temporarily forwarded to? Or is this also only possible if you have a Swedish personal number?

In fact buying old Swedish houses is so popular among Germans that you often find description in German or English for some objects at many selling sites.

I could imagine that this is not a very unusual phenomenon for people who move to another country, so wondering how they do solve this kind of issues. Or are they all renting or buying their new home already from out the country they come from without even being able to see it in realtime in advance, meeting the owner or getting the key immediately after signing and paying? If so, won't that be risky?

Well, actually at first It took me a long time to dare to make that decision. The eye-opener for me was when I suddenly realized: Man, what am i doing! I am single, not dependent on work or to anyone, I have enough money to go, and then I don't take that opportunity?? Crowds of people would be very jealous of me! That was the turning point for me.

Yeah, I read about that, about that they have strict requirements about how you are insured. Still have to figure out if my insurence will be sufficient, but I am rather sure it is.
By the way, Today i got an email from a swedish person who said it is difficult these days to find a place to stay because of Corona. I was a little surprised by hearing that, because isn't it that in Sweden restrictions till now only apply for gatherings with more than 50 people? I mean, in a home are not necessarily more than 50 people, right?

Restriction of 50 people gathering applies only for activities, events and other gatherings like that.
"Hard to find accommodation because of Corona" seems an exaggerating but It may depends on the area too. I can see that they sell properties everyday in everywhere, only change is they have limited property viewing method.

It was spread largely in areas like, from Kista up to Tensta and then from Skärholmen down to Norsborg, all are immigrant packed areas.
However if you rent an entire flat or house it does not matter which area but if you want to rent a room then obviously you create "fear" among both you and your landlord
Well, I personally wouldn't use the word "essential" since it has been already proven worldwide that the death rate (the IFR) of this virus is not higher than a normal seasonal flu and the way how tests are done (instructed by the WHO) to measure Covid-19 (which isn't even possible to measure) is far from thrustworthy. Besides, because Sweden didn't have a lockdown (smart!), Sweden has reached herd immunity a long time already. But that's just me and also another topic which is not really for here of course :-)

Essential in the point of view of real estate agencies, because it is enough if one of their potential buyers/clients get infected during a property viewing, which would create bad reputation to their good name and business trademark, you know how these countries function.
