NLV application

I have just been informed that for NLV purposes (we are most of the way through the administrative nightmare and intend moving before the end of this year) I will have to submit a declaration to the Spanish Embassy stating that I will support my wife financially. We have a joint bank account, I receive 3 pensions, she is due to receive her state pension in February 2024. The declaration has to be signed by a notary (at a cost of £205 for a signature and official stamp). Has anyone else had to do this via the London embassy? Also, why do the Spanish insist on a notary - I have an acquaintance who owns a law firm with offices in two countries (UK/USA) - will the Spanish authorities not accept a solicitor's/lawyer's signature and stamp?

Any advice from anyone with direct experience of this would be most welcome, thank you.

Solicitor Will probably be fine, email them and ask. Because in France a notary does legal paperwork and you go to a Advocate for divorces etc I am moving from France to Spain. €680; for NLV. But I just had bank stamp my bank statements to show I had funds. Too young to retire.

If just an administrative detail as officially all the income is in your name, and until next year your wife has none. No big deal. I did the same for my partner when I applied for residence.


Spain is a notary-based country for all legal issues, so you'll need to get used to them! :-) Buying, selling, contracts, declarations... all involve a visit to your local notary. Some solicitors are also notaries, but, in general, if someone says they need a notarized document, then you need to get a notarized document.  :-)


Usually, they want a Spanish document stamped by a Spanish notary (which perhaps can be done at the Spanish Embassy instead of making a trip to Spain). But perhaps the Spanish Embassy in the UK is happy with an English document stamped by a British notary. Best to check with the Embassy to clarify exactly what they want from you.


Immigration bureaucracy is always a pain in the proverbial. If you've gotten through it for a couple of hundred quid, then you should count yourself lucky! :-)

Many thanks for your insights. Having lived in Germany, France and Spain for a number of years pre-Brexit, I am amazed at the Spanish requirements and costs involved. It’s not a couple of hundred quid - nearer to £2,000! Plus much frustration with what seem to be entirely unnecessary delays. I voted NO in the referendum and am tempted to throw nasty stuff at anyone who said YES. Never mind, we progress tortoise style and will get there in the end. 🤬

I suppose looking on the bright side at least you can get a non lucrative visa to live in Spain. The other countries you write about they do not exist. You will have to get use to the slower way administration works here in Spain. They are just getting you prepared. 1f609.svg

I do understand that different cultures have varying requirements and administrative procedures, but all bureaucracies tend to be turgid...as a free spirit I find that mildly frustrating. Never mind, Spain here I come.

@RibeiraSacra Obtaining a NLV in Spain is very complicated, time-consuming, administratively complex and expensive. We are close to finishing the process and are very relieved indeed.

We are just starting our NLV process - renting in UK, but need a Spanish address for medical insurance etc.Does this mean we will have to rent a property in Spain, prior to being there? Has anyone else had to do this? It is difficult to know at what stage to rent out there... any advice greatly received.

You can find a hotel in the city you will move to in the future as a temporary home.

There are lots of youtube tutorials on the NLV, from people who have done it from various countries.  I think you only have to have to name the city where you will be living to get an insurance policy.  There are lots of insurance companies that specialize in expat health insurance, that would meet the requirements of the Visa.  Do a google search.  Also there are sub reddits about this process with people sharing their experience.


It will depend on your country and your consulate.  I am from the US and got my Visa, had to provide proof of one years paid health insurance that meets the requirements of the Spanish consulate.  Some people get a short term rental, I will be getting a hotel while I look for my long term rental.  I also have a specialist helping me.  There are a few of those around in different cities.


It is not an easy process, but you just have to go step by step.  Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for your help and advice... do any of you have experience in submitting NLV application to the Spanish consulate in London... it looks like they take your passports off you and take up to 60 days to process the application.???

Yes. They take your passports for 90 days. We received our approval/NLV in 6 weeks after document check interview. It is very doable if you follow their requirements

Yes. It always says ‘processing’ which is very frustrating.
