Slovakia is an excellent country to visit as there is plenty to see and do no matter what you are interested in.  If would like to experience the rich cultural heritage of the country then I would recommend hiring a car but as rail and bus is inexpensive and good you could see plenty that way.  Summer is probably a better time to sight see as winter tends to be cold to very cold with plenty of ice and snow the further you travel from the capital.
