Neave Brit

Long story, cut short, but had my own house about 30 years ago, just bult and sold a beach front in the Philippines lived in the middle east for over 10 years, and wanted to come back to the UK to buy my own house near the sea and retire. Almost near completion on a house and getting messed around, I made an off the wall comment to the estate agent that I would go abroad and live, because I was fed up with the process and what the Government plans to do regarding taxation on pensions. After several days and talking to people, I get the feeling I would be better off out of the UK, financially I save myself £10K in stamp duty, and endless UK taxes.

After all that would love to hear from people with some local advice.

Thanks in advance

Hi Kevin,

Thanx to Brexit, you will have to get a Visa unless you hold a passport from another EU country.

@kevinwood,

What is your purpose in launching this discussion on the Portugal forum? Are you looking for a tax haven to retirees? In Portugal, the tax benefits for pensioners have already ended in 2021-2023, so I don't understand your question here. In Europe, I think there's Albania, Greece, Cyprus, ...

Those were the days. It was even interesting for EU citizens.

I'm still not sure what you mean by endless UK taxes. If you don't want to pay taxes, then I'm not sure Europe is right for you.

Hi,

Assuming you run a UK passport and not an EU one then you may qualify for a D7 passive income visa, sort of aimed at retirees, if your non-working income (plus other conditions) is over a basic amount such as the basic UK state pension is.  But then you'll then also be taxed on this and your world wide income, so if you have rental income, savings income, shares income these will need to be declared and taxed appropriately.  I'd suggest you look on here where there's a lot of information on this and work out the basics then compare with the UK.
