Importing my car

phill6144

We are applying for a D7 visa and need some advice about how to arrange taking or transferring our car to Portugal from the UK. We have been told there is a company who can support with the relevant documentation and process.

Can anyone help and point us in the right direction.

Many thanks Phil

@phill6144 Hi Phil. We are going through this right now. My short answer to you is - unless you are really attached to the car just don't bother. By all means drive down in it so you can use it until you get your residency, then take it back and sell it. We chose to bring ours as replacing it here would have cost much more than the costs involved BUT it's pretty much a nightmare. If you join ACP they will help you for a fee of about 500 euro. So, if love and money don't figure - choose the easy option!

Hi @phill6144, Welcome.

If you have no emotional attachment to this car, I think it's best to sell it and buy a new or second-hand one in Portugal. It's less trouble for you.

Another option is to get a cheap but reliable UK car (assume you are from UK) and you can use it for up 6 months in EU, obviously Insure/MOT/tax so legal then either flog to someone going back to UK or scarp it officially so you can return V5 as "exported". Scrap as in recycle place like (link to map).
