Hi Amanda and William, I'm Jennifer. We know the Algarve like the back of our hand so if you give us some more information as to what you are looking for in an area, we can help you with this. ***

To be a bit more generic, and to give you some food for thought to get you started:

Lisbon has a very good connection to numerous US states, so could be a good idea to fly into Lisbon. Lisbon is far too hilly to spend more than long weekend, nevermind retirement, however you can get the train to Cascais and explore this area.  I however would suggest hiring a car and coming down towards the Algarve, stopping at Alcacer do Sal, and perhaps hopping across to Evora before making your way down the Toll roads to the Algarve, where you can go West and explore fisherman villages like Salema, Burgau or drop-in at Albufeira and look at places like Guia or Vilamoura or Loule. From here you could come over to the East Algarve (stopping at Tavira - an excellent choice for retirement), and eventually carrying on into Spain. You can stop in Ayomonte, then from here go down to Tarifa, moving back up to Sotogrande then Estepona Old Town, (if you like a mountain feel, then Benahavis is beautiful and the restaurants are to die for!). You can then fly back out to the US from Malaga or Madrid.
