Hi Catherinea, Welcome.

As an EU citizen, you have the right to live and move freely within Portugal. However, there are some formalities to complete.

For stays of up to 3 months, you don't need any special registration, just a valid identity document (ID card or passport).

Residence for more than 3 Months: Registration Certificate

If you plan to reside in Portugal for more than 3 months, it's mandatory to apply for a Certificate of Registration for an EU Citizen. You have a 30-day window after the first 3 months of your entry into Portugal to complete this registration.

Where to apply: At the Câmaras Municipais (City Halls/Municipalities) in your area of residence in Portugal.

Required documents:

  1. Valid ID card or passport.
  2. A sworn declaration stating that you have sufficient financial resources for yourself and your family (if applicable), as well as health insurance (if required in your country of origin for Portuguese citizens).

Cost: The Certificate of Registration usually has an associated fee (around €15).

Permanent Residence Card: after 5 years of residence in Portugal, you can then apply for a Permanent Residence Card for EU Nationals.

Where to apply: At the AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum) offices, with a prior appointment.

Other Important Information

  1. NIF (Tax Identification Number): It's essential to obtain a NIF as soon as possible, as you'll need it to open a bank account, sign contracts (rental, employment, services), etc. You can apply for it at any Finanças (Tax Office).
  2. Healthcare: You'll have access to the National Health Service (SNS) in Portugal. It's advisable to register at the health center in your area of residence.
  3. Social Security: If you work in Portugal, you'll be registered with Social Security.
  4. Opening a bank account: With your NIF and identification document, you can open a bank account
