jewelawake

I hope to live on the Azores as a retired person.  What % of my Social Security income will be taxed?  Thank you so much.

Portugal taxes what has been agreed in the relevant double taxation agreement. Nothing more and nothing less. Usually these agreements are available from some government website and in both relevant languages.

As far as I know, public pensions, such as US government pensions, are generally only taxable in the US and exempt from Portuguese tax. Private pensions are subject to Portuguese tax if the recipient is a tax resident in Portugal. But you can find more if you google it.

Thank you so much for that link.  It does say social security retirement benefits are not taxed by Portugal.

I have seen many complaints of having to pay SS taxes to both the US and Portugal.

So I doubt that you have been given the correct information from that website.

What wasn't clear in those complaints, was how they could claim back the tax from Portugal.
