Cooking like a local in Norway

Priscilla

Hello,

Enjoying the local food of your expat country is great, but learning to cook the dishes yourself is even better. Please share what it's like cooking like a local in Norway.

What are some of the most popular local dishes that are easy to prepare?

What are the most common ingredients used in dishes in Norway? Where can you purchase them?

Is there a specific technique or a secret ingredient to master the local cuisine?

Are there resources available to teach you to cook like a local (classes, websites, etc.)?

What are the advantages of learning to prepare local dishes in Norway?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

I particularly love cooking fårikål, brun lapskaus and potet grateng..  Potato is the most staple vegetable. Daily dinners are pretty basic, meat/fish and vegetables. Norwegians mostly eat breads with cheese and pålegg (cold cuts). Reker in loaf is something i find odd at first but i grew fond of it. Just a little mayo and lemon :-)

Fiskeboller og fiskepudding are also very common. I often make fiskeboller i hvit saus med kari and it's a comfort food :-) don't forget the potatoes of course😉

Bread making is also easy. I normally make boller and loaf since most ingredients are available in kiwi and rema1000.

During jul season, i love making ribbe and eating pinnekjøtt. :-)

Cakes are pretty much marzipan.
