Can an Italian dentist hire a foreigner in a non-clinical capacity?

Tarek Tantawy

Hi there!

I'm a dentist by education/training/title but I'm currently working remotely as a content writer for a US-based dental company. I have an Italian dentist friend who runs a self-owned private dental practice. I was wondering if it'd be possible for my friend to apply for a "Nulla Osta" on my behalf so that I can apply for a work visa from overseas. I'm interested in moving to Italy and since I have my remote work already, I can do that from anywhere.

The hiring part is a technicality for the sake of the visa application process. I don't have a license to practice in Italy, so the position has to be non-clinical (e.g. dental assistant, receptionist, etc). So I guess my question is: are dentists considered to be employers in the eye of the state? Do they have the right to hire international applicants for different positions as long as it's withing their practice?

Thank you!

Of course dentist are considered employers, he needs to apply to the Questura for you and they have to accept , at first they will give you a 9 month visa , then again the permesso di soggiorno(permit to stay in italy)
will be for 9 months , after two consecutive renewals you can get a normal work permesso di soggiorno. For people who have like 0 qualifications its difficult , im talking about pakistanis and bangladeshis who come to italy to work as fruit pickers or car washers , for you I know it will be a walk in the park. The wage is something important too , tell your friend to artificially raise it so the Questura wont have any second guesses , it might also be a good thing if your friend can find a rent contract for a house for you.

Your friend will, however, have to pay all your state contributions, taxes, etc, and if they come and check, and you arent there working, things will get very complicated.
