Sufficient income

Nick639

My wife is an EU National and I am American. I plan to move to Germany to where she lives and apply for my residence permit. Does she need to provide information about sufficient income or not? I read on another forum that German citizens and EU Nationals do not need to provide information regarding their income. Does anyone know if this is true?

Asfar as I know, the minimum income rules do not apply to spouses of German citizens (who have a right to stay here even if destitute).
But I do not know what the authorities can and will ask to see before issuing a residence permit. You better ask them directly!

Since you mention that your wife is a EU national, instead of saying German, then I assume she is not German. I'm not sure if this will make a difference as far as the income requirement but there are some differences. Say if she is German then you usually need to pass an A1 level German test but if she is from another EU country I think this is waived.

And of course the first thing is to move and get settled. But in the long run it can be a problem if a couple doesn't earn enough. After some years you would be able to switch from a limited residency to an unlimited one - but only if earning enough. Or if one eventually ends up needing social assistance of any kind, it can can also delay getting unlimited residency or block eventual naturalization if that is your long term goal.

And even EU citizens must first live and work in Germany for around 2 years before they can even apply for social assistance. They have a right to work in Germany but not just show up and get welfare.

Sorry, I somehow assumed the wife is German, but of course you wrote other EU national. In that case Tom is correct above!

Yes to clarify she is a EU National living in Germany. So what I understand is that for the temporary residence it doesn’t matter so much how much she makes but when I apply for permanent residence it’s important that she makes more? I will probably have a job of my own at that time so would that count as sufficient income when applying for permanent residence?

It is important that you (and your wife) never received any aid or transfer from the authorities, not that you have a job at the time of applying.

Thank you for your responses. To clarify, as long as she has not applied for or accepted welfare then there is no minimum income for an EU citizen bringing a foreign spouse?

That is my understanding of the requirements for the unlimited resodency permit (which you can get 3 years after moving to Germany), but better check with the authorities.
