Working for other EU country in Germany

Maria08022014

Hello, I am in Munich for almost 4 years with my family and I have managed to be able communicating in German (not perfectly). I need anyones experience on working remotely for another EU country. I have a proposal to work for my former greek employer remotely but I don't know how to do it with all these regulations here. For me is important for family reasons to stay at home. The problem is that the greek employer cannot get involved in german bureaucracy. Does anyone has similar experience? Can I do it as freelancer?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

This is a complex topic and will create quite a lot of additional effort (and cost) for you.

First and foremost: To officially employ you, the company needs a German subsidiary or registered office.

Without that, you will be (from a German legal standpoint) self-employed.

This means you get no social security, unemployment and other benefits, and (missing the employer's share) you have to pay double for your health and pension scheme.

It also means you have to take care of taxation (incl. commercial taxes, as you are then a business), accountancy and possibly licensing or business registration by yourself. Without fluency in (buerocratic) German, you will have to engage (and pay) professional service providers for this, as the consequences of mistakes (even if unknowingly done) are severe.

All this will mean you spend a considerable amount of time and money on such issues (instead of on your actual work) and this makes such a proposal unattractive in most cases.

Before embarking on such a venture, definitely consult professionals to understand how this would all work!

Pretty much the same in Austria; definitely get an accountant who understands cross-border taxes, etc.
