need expat opinion on move to Jyvaskyla

tamal31

Hello people I am new here. I am from Kolkata, India. Recently completed my PhD from Jadavpur University India in the field of Industrial and Production Engineering. I have recently got a postdoc offer from University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The gross salary is roughly 40k Eur / year. Health care, pension, travel or accidental benefits are covered.

Can any one tell me how good this job offer is?
how good is the  University of Jyväskylä?
what would be my net monthly salary?
Is it enough for an Indian to live a good life and save some?
How is the living cost in Jyväskylä to live a moderate life? (say i need a 1 bedroom apartment close to University, i would mostly cook my food at home, i am not too much outgoing)
My PI over there wants me to join the job ASAP. How long it generally takes to process the residence permit application for researchers?
if i opt to bring my wife later after I joined the job, how much difficult the process would be to obtain a residence permit for her?

any help would be appreciated.

Hi Tamal. Nice to hear from you and welcome to  my hometown Jyväskylä, if you decide for it! The pay sounds fine, about the taxes I'm not quite sure, but for any info you need please contact Arja Seppälä or Anu Juurakko at Gloria (Monikulttuurikeskus/Multicultural Centre in Jyväskylä). They are in Facebook and Arja is the head of the center and Anu a Project Co-ordinator (both ladies), if my memory serves me right! They are both good friends of mine, so you you say hi from me if you happen to send them e-mail. If they can't provide you the info you need please ask them to send you any contacts that could provide you with some further info. You are also welcome to contact me via this channel and maybe we could exchange some news or useful tips about Jyväskylä to help you settle in later on. Good luck!

My e-mail is ***, you can also write to me if you need to know something about the town.

:)
