Healthcare in Estonia

Julien

Hi,

how does the healthcare system work in Estonia ? Is it efficient ?

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in Estonia?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience !

how does the healthcare system works in Estonia ? Is it efficient ?

The healthcare is public for all children under 19, the elderly, and working individuals. If you are unemployed, you are taken care of but not covered (if that makes sense). You won't be denied care unless you're registered as an unemployed individual. For foreigners in Estonia, if you work here legally with a residence permit and pay social taxes, you are also covered. Dental is normally not covered unless it is for oral surgery or life-threatening (like cancer of the mouth), in cases like that its a medical issue. Foreigners must have a job to be included in local healthcare, for those here temporarily, you should have local private healthcare purchased, travel insurance, and/or EU recognized healthcare provider.

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Private insurance will get you access to specific doctors and usually gives the opportunity to select doctors that you have immediate access to. It gives you the opportunity for better care, but it costs extra to public. The public insurance is still rather very good. If you have public healthcare it is not really needed to have a private healthcare provider. As in the case of travelers/students/people working for foreign companies, I suggest purchasing 3rd party health insurance and in many cases this is a requirement for those who stay here and don't work in a local company or pay local taxes.

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in Estonia?

Yes, for students it is required. For short-term workers, it is recommended
